Why Small Businesses Are the Real Stars of Your Neighborhood

EXT. Historic Home - Day

The sun is shining down on this beautiful Victorian Style home that is surrounded by scaffolding. Hammering can be heard coming from the inside of the home.

We settle on the street, looking at the front door. The hammering stops.

A woman can be heard screaming.

A MAN (O.S.)
Oh my God, I am so sorry, I'll go turn off the water.

A MAN comes dashing out of the front door and is soaking wet. He removes the cover for the main waterline and turns the water off. He sits on the curb and wipes the water off of his face.

A woman exits the house. She is soaking wet. She smiles and joins the man on the curb.

WOMAN
I'll play you for it.

The woman and man play Rock Paper Scissors. The woman loses.

WOMAN (CONT'D)
I'm going to the hardware store on Main Street. Those other stores don't have what we need and there is never anyone to help.

MAN
Just be careful.

He kisses the woman and groans as he stands up and goes back into the house.

The woman gets into an OLD RUSTED TRUCK and drives off.

int. Hardware Store - Day

The Woman enters. She is greeted by an OLD MAN with kind eyes and a welcoming smile.

OLD MAN
How can I help you, Young Lady?

WOMAN
It smells so good in here. What is that?

OLD MAN
Saw dust, I reckon. Maybe gear oil.

WOMAN
It's nice, whatever it is.

OLD MAN
So how can I be of service?

WOMAN
My husband and I RECENTLY bought the old house on Maple street.

OLD MAN
The Johnson home, I know it well.

WOMAN
Well my husband has been going to... Well, the other stores to buy supplies for the place. No OFFENSE.

OLD MAN
Non taken.

WOMAN
It's just, you know how it is. We moved from the city and are used to certain stores for certain things, you know?

OLD MAN
No need to explain. What is it that you need?

WOMAN
Well, almost EVERYTHING. We tried everywhere to find the parts we need, and they don't have like...

OLD MAN
Quality.

WOMAN
Yes! You know.

OLD MAN
What room are you working on at the moment?

WOMAN
We are bouncing back and forth, you know?

OLD MAN
How about this. Let concentrate on one room at a time, and I'll do my best to help you get what you need.

WOMAN
What if you don't have what we need?

OLD MAN
Then I will call my supplier and get it.

WOMAN
Thank you so much.

The Old Man leads the way towards Kitchen supplies.

Ext. Hardware store - day

The Old Man slams the tailgate of the woman's truck closed. The bed of the truck is packed WITH building materials.

WOMAN
Thank you so much for all of your help. You were a godsend.

OLD MAN
Thank you for your BUSINESS. We don't get the customers like we used to. Business has been rough.

WOMAN
Well I'm sending my husband here from now on. He's stubborn and could use someone with experience to talk to, rather than YouTube.

OLD MAN
Can't wait to meet him.

WOMAN
Maybe we can have you over for dinner when we finish REMODELING.

OLD MAN
That would be lovely.

The Woman drives off.

EXT. HISTORIC HOME - DAY

A few months later.

The Man and Woman are sitting on the porch, holding hands and enjoying the early EVENING.

The Old Man approaches the front gate.

MAN
Hold on, there's a trick to it.

He rushes towards the front gate.

The Old Man opens the gate without a problem.

MAN (CONT'D)
How did you...

The Old Man offers the Man a smile and a bottle of wine.

OLD MAN
Toby Johnson, nice to meet you.

WOMAN
Johnson? Like Johnson, Johnson?

She points to the house.

OLD MAN
This was my childhood home.

MAN
Welcome, Mr. Johnson. Come on in and make yourself at home.

The Old Man looks up at the house, taking in every square inch of it, noticing all the supplies he sold the young couple. He enters through the front door.

OLD MAN (O.S.)
Fix the doorbell yet?

MAN
We've been meaning to talk to you about that.

They share a laugh.
